L.M. Montgomery Reading Challenge, Round 2: Wrap-Up

Carrie of Reading to Know sponsored this great challenge in which she challenged us to read books by L.M. Montgomery in the month of January!
I did read three books for this challenge, not the three I initially planned on though!

My plan was to read the Emily trilogy.

For some reason, my mind wandered and I also checked out Kilmeny of the Orchard from the library. I figured this book was so short in length (around 90 pages) it couldn't possibly take long to read! Boy, Was I wrong! I stumbled and procrastinated and then eventually did finish it. I will admit, I didn't know what or who Kilmeny was supposed to be (if you haven't read it, I don't want to spoil it!) Having said all that, while it wasn't one of my favorite books, I did enjoy it. though it seemed to just be starting when it ended.

On the other hand, I so loved Emily of New Moon This wonderful story of a young girl orphaned and uprooted to live with distant relatives whom she's never met was one I could not put down! I liked her honesty, her spunk, and her determination to survive no matter what the obstacle, including her Aunt Elizabeth who she does eventually ( I think) win over.

I am almost done with my third book for this challenge: Emily Climbs.. This story picks up where the last left off, and Emily is now headed to high school with her friends. Despite having to live with her Aunt Ruth, Emily manages to remain true to herself and I continue to admire her as she grows into a young woman and a writer.

Even though I didn't finish the trilogy, I am glad that I participated in this challenge and got the chance to "meet" Emily!! (I am going to read the final book, too!)

Not Just Swollen Glands...

Leave it to me---I've been feeling somewhat under the weather all week and felt like a I had swollen glands. When I was rubbing under my chin, I noticed a very swollen gland along my jawline, about the size of a half-dollar.

So yesterday, I went to the ENT and it turns out that my salivary gland is infected and I have a stone in it!!! He put me on antibiotics and I have to follow-up with him on the 8th. Hopefully, the antibiotics will dissolve the stone. If not, I will have to have it removed surgically, which won't be a big deal. It doesn't really hurt, it just feels uncomfortable.

Unfortunately, the antibiotic is seriously messing with my stomach though! I'll spare you the gory details but suffice it to say that I rescheduled with my friend Joan again! Tucker is still at my my mom's so I was able to rest today.

Christmas Day

I know Christmas was a little over a month ago but I noticed that these had actually loaded and since it takes so long to load, I figured I would share them!

Tucker opening presents

Michael got me 2 books, a gift certificate to a book store, and a book light

I gave Michael a hooded Yankees sweatshirt

Tucker did a great job eating his dinner!

A family shot with the presents Tucker picked out with my mom, a calendar for me abd spatulas for Michael (Michael's the breakfast-cooker)

Tucker got a remote control car from Michael's mom

Eileen and Doreen serve dessert: Banana cream pie-yum!

My Daybook

For today, Wednesday, January 27, 2010 (yes one of those "better-late-than-never" weeks!!)

On My Mind...glad that Tucker is feeling better! He came home from school Thursday with a headache and sore throat and didn't even want to go to soccer practice (that's when we knew he was sick!) He went to my mom's on Fri and when I called the school to let them know he was sick, the secretary mentioned that strep is going around so I called the pediatrician and got him in Fri afternoon and sure enough, he has strep! He's been taking his medicine twice a day and is feeling much better. He did have a little set-back Sunday night when he threw up ALL OVER our bed at 2 AM so he went to my mom's again Monday but since then, he's been fine.

Outside My Window...it is dark of course. We've been enjoying temps in the mid to upper 40s but it's starting to go back down to normal and there's a possibility of snow tomorrow.

What We're Reading...I finished Emily of New Moon and am halfway through Emily Climbs. I got the first two books of the Twilight series for my birthday so I am looking forward to possibly reading them next. Tucker's favorites this week were: The Marshmallow Incident (by the author of Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs), Penguins Strange and Wonderful, and The Enormous Crocodile.

What We're Listening to...I just finished Three Junes by Julia Glass ion the way home today. I need to get to the library for another audio book, maybe Saturday.

What We're Watching...I'm watching/listening to The State of the Union as I type this...the usual: iCarly, Dirty Jobs, Mythbusters. Also following The Biggest Loser this time around-wasn't happy with last week's elimination but feel that Michael has semi-redeemed himself this week and VERY happy with the elimination this week...Also Tucker and I watched Shrek and Toy Story 2 when we were home Saturday. We also watched Jon and Kate Plus 8 (we have the DVDs from Seasons 1 & 2, which I find both comforting (because we are/were really fans of this show) and sad (because of how it all turned out).

I am hoping...to catch up on my sleep at some point!

Quotable Quote Life is partly what we make it, and partly what is made by the friends whom we choose. ~ Tehyi Hsieh

In the Kitchen...we had ham steaks tonight...Michael will probably make french toast tomorrow (I'm working late)...and then Tucker's at my mother's until Sunday.

Around the House...laundry needs to be folded...the army battlefield is set up again down here in the family room...I can hear the dishwasher finishing up.

Coming Up This Week...soccer practice tomorrow...Tucker's going to my mom's Fri until Sun...we rescheduled my getting together with Joan because both she and Tucker were sick last week so getting together with Joan on Sat to celebrate Christmas and our birthdays...soccer game Sun afternoon.

Some Picture Thoughts...at my mom's celebrating my birthday, Cassandra, Michael, and Tucker checked out games on Cassandra's iPhone

Eileen, Doreen, and Cassandra got me the first two books of the Twilight series, which I have been wanting to read but wanted my own copies. Check out the silly faces on Tucker and Michael!

The Big 4-0

Today is my 40th birthday!

I arrived at work this morning only to be surprised by my mother complete with cake, balloons, signs announcing my birthday (and how old I was!) She had also managed to gather a few residents and some staff (which she has a knack for) and was pretty impressive for 7:30 in the morning!!! It definitely made for a good start to the day!

We went out for pizza tonight for dinner and when we came home, Tucker and Michael gave me flowers and a zebra-print snuggie!

It was a great day!

To live each day with zest . . .
To daily grow and try to be
My highest and my best!

Once more to right some wrongs,
To pray for peace, to plant a tree,
And sing more joyful songs
